- 1650: Niagara Falls under control of the Seneca Nation of Native Americans
- 1675: Father Louis Hennepin is first European to view the Falls
- 1678: The French settle in the area
- 1759: The British arrive and settle
- 1776: The American Revolution
- 1803: Jerome Bonaparte (younger brother of Napolean) and bride are rumored to be the first couple to honeymoon at Niagara Falls
- 1812: Settlements around Niagara Falls decimated. Buffalo burned to the ground in War of 1812
- 1825: Erie Canal opens
- 1885: Niagara Reservation Park (U.S.) opens. The Ontario government establishes the Niagara Parks Commission (Canada)
- 1892: Niagara Falls, NY incorporated as a city. Fourth Maid of the Mist is built
- 1901: Anne Edison Taylor becomes the first person to survive a barrel ride over the Falls. President McKinley is assassinated at Buffalo's Pan American Exposition
- 1903: Niagara Falls, Ontario incorporated as a city
- 1969: Water flow to the American Falls cut off to study erosion and rock formations
