What a great way to cool down during the dog days of summer.

NHL Draft picks enjoy the Maid

7/6/16

Before the annual NHL Draft in Buffalo, potential newcomers to the league need to take some time to wind down and relax before the stressful time of waiting to find out which team has selected them. This is exactly what the top five prospects did on June 23, and what better place to relax than on the Maid of the Mist?

The 2016 NHL Draft took place from June 24 to June 25 at First Niagara Center, home of the Buffalo Sabres. During this time, Buffalo came to life as the spirit of hockey was breathed back into the city. Since the Sabres did not make the playoffs, there had been relatively little hockey news relating directly to Buffalo until the draft. Media outlets from across the U.S. and Canada flocked to The City of Good Neighbors to report.

The top prospects of this year are all teenagers. In fact, none of them are over the age of 18. On the day before the draft began, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Auston Matthews, Matthew Tkachuk, Patrik Laine and Jesse Puljujarvi gathered on the Maid of the Mist to relieve stress and mingle with the public. The players talked to and took pictures with fans, as well as took in the awe-inspiring sites of Niagara Falls. These five athletes are not all from America. Two of them, Tkachuk and Matthews, were raised in Arizona. Dubois is from Canada, while Puljujarvi and Laine hail from Finland.

This year, the number one draft pick was Matthews, who was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs. The other young men will be playing for Columbus, Calgary, Winnipeg, and Edmonton.
