Maid of the Mist open for 2019 season

Maid of the Mist opened its 2019 season Friday, May 24. Maid of the Mist VI and Maid of the Mist VII depart every 15 minutes from the Maid of the Mist Landing in Niagara Falls, New York.

The season runs through Nov. 3.

Earlier this month, Maid of the Mist announced that late in the summer of 2019, two new all-electric, emission-free passenger vessels will be placed into service, the first of their kind in the United States.

“As one of North America’s longest running tourist attractions, we are looking forward to once again welcoming guests from around the world,” said Christopher M. Glynn, president of Maid of the Mist Corp. “There is always great anticipation as our vessels begin their voyages to the base of Niagara Falls, providing guests with an iconic experience only available on Maid of the Mist.”

In 1846, Maid of the Mist I, a side-steamboat ferry with twin smokestacks, could carry a stagecoach and horses across the Niagara River.  In 1848, construction of a suspension bridge curtailed business and Maid of the Mist was re-branded as a sightseeing adventure.  A combination of factors led to the suspension of service from 1861 until June 13, 1885, when a new Maid of the Mist boat ventured closer to the Horseshoe Falls than any boat ever had.  Service has continued non-stop for 134 consecutive seasons.

Today, Maid of the Mist VI and Maid of the Mist VII can accommodate as many as 600 passengers.
