An industry veteran with deep maritime experience has been appointed Maid of the Mist Vice President of Operations. Captain Joe Curtis is overseeing a crew of maritime engineers, captains and mates, deckhands, guest services, and retail associates who operate one of North America’s longest continuously operating tourist attractions. Curtis has leadership experience, overseeing marine operations, retail, marketing, IT, legal, finance, and HR to drive safe, compliant, and efficient enterprise-wide performance. He is known for his hands-on, strategic approach and strong customer focus, with a track record of mentoring future leaders and fostering a culture of service excellence, respect, and continuous improvement.

Glynn. “He has sailed the high seas as a boat captain, has worked in the container ship industry, and has experience in the travel tourism industry. Curtis comes to Maid of the Mist from APL Maritime Limited USA, in Arlington, Va., where he was Marine Personnel and Labor Relations director and senior operations manager. APL provides container transportation through its international shipping network. He has a wide range of vessel operations in both domestic and international shipping companies: Curtis also served as director of Career Services at the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine, and operations manager at Western Bulk in Seattle, Wash. He has also worked for various commercial companies as a licensed deck officer, previously holding an unlimited Masters License and various First Class Pilot certifications in the Hawaiian Islands.

Curtis has a BS in marine transportation/business administration from Maine Maritime Academy and an MS in organizational management from the University of Phoenix. He has human resources management and labor relations and contract management certificates from Cornell University.
